The Moon’s sign, and why it changes every other day

The Moon circles the zodiac in twenty-seven days and eight hours, faster than anything else in the sky, so she spends about two and a half days in each sign and changes sign roughly every other day. The Sun takes a month to do what she does in two days. This speed is why astrologers watch the Moon’s sign rather than the Sun’s for the temper of a particular day, and why Moondark shows it at the top of the Now screen at all times.

A sign is a twelfth of the ecliptic, the Sun’s path, counted from the point where the Sun stands at the spring equinox. It is not the constellation behind the Moon. The constellations and the signs shared names and places two thousand years ago and have drifted apart by about a sign since, so the Moon in the sign of Taurus is usually in front of the stars of Aries. Moondark uses the signs, as Western astrology does, and says so plainly.

Each sign has an element, a mode, and a ruler, and the Moon has a dignity in some of them. She rules Cancer and is at home there. She is exalted in Taurus, the old word for being a welcome guest. She is in her detriment in Capricorn, opposite her home, and in her fall in Scorpio, opposite her exaltation. None of these makes a Moon good or bad; they describe how easily she does what she does. Moondark’s sign pages give these facts for each sign along with the essence of the Moon there.

The Moon’s sign matters to the void directly. A void ends when she enters the next sign, so the sign change is the void’s other boundary, and Moondark names the minute of every ingress. The last aspect she makes in a sign, the one that begins the void, is often colored by the sign she is leaving, and the first aspect in the new sign by the one she has entered.

Moondark shows the Moon’s sign, her degree, the minute she entered, and the minute she leaves, and a tap opens the sign page. The degree carries its image, because a Moon at 4° Taurus and a Moon at 27° Taurus are in the same sign and are not the same Moon.
