The hinge degree

Every degree of the zodiac holds an image. Three hundred and sixty degrees, three hundred and sixty distinct images, each tied to a single degree of the wheel.

These are the Sabian symbols. They were transmitted in 1925, in San Diego, by an astrologer named Marc Edmund Jones and a clairvoyant named Elsie Wheeler—three hundred and sixty cards, three hundred and sixty scenes, dictated in a single working session. They read like dream fragments. A butterfly emerging from a chrysalis. A young wanderer steps out of the woods and gazes at far cities. They are not predictions. They are images that ask to be recognized.

When the Moon makes her final aspect in a sign, she makes it at a specific degree. That degree is the hinge—the last image spoken before the silence begins, the pivot between two signs' worth of conversation. The Sabian at the hinge is the image she carries with her into the void.

Some 1925 imagery hasn't aged well. Where the literal language carries slurs, gendered defaults, or trauma the symbol isn't actually about, Moondark surfaces the archetype the symbol is reaching for, in plain modern English. The 1925 originals stay in our source of record for scholarship; they are not what the app shows.
